NOREEN: Passing a law won't solve homelessness PDF Print E-mail
THE GAZETTE

On a frozen Monday, as homeless people in Colorado Springs endured hell, the City Council cast a no camping ordinance into purgatory.

Advocates of a law making it illegal to camp in public rights-of-way can still work on it until it comes back to the council in February. But several council members made it clear they don’t like the idea, especially because no one has yet devised an alternative for where the homeless can go if they are evicted.

Councilman Tom Gallagher easily was the most strident opponent, recalling how he once lived under a bridge himself.

“Where else do they go?” Gallagher asked. “The gauge of a community is how it treats its least fortunate. I’m more compassionate than this ordinance, and I’m a son of a bitch.”

Homeless Man Dies Across Street From Shelter PDF Print E-mail

thehomelessdehumanizedimg

A 48-year-old man was found dead across the street from San Diego's winter shelter for the homeless Friday morning.

Certainly one has to wonder if the tents were still able to be used by the homeless during the winter and freezing months of San Diego, if this would not have happened. Recently the new Police Cheif of San Diego ordered officers to issue citations and to harass homeless people who set up tents in public areas for sleeping.

Medical examiner's deputies believe Steven Alan Andrade succumbed to natural causes. The 230-bunk shelter's occupants are both saddened -- and glad they made it inside last night.

Directly across Island Avenue from where Andrade's body lay under a thin blanket, the shelter was into its third day of operation.

While San Diego is envied for its balmy climate, especially in winter, temperatures had dropped below 50 in the Center City area overnight.

Police got a report of Andrade's death at 6:23 a.m.

How are the Homeless Dehumanized? PDF Print E-mail

yoshaAlmost every person who is homeless goes through a process of dehumanization. Here are some of the ways homeless people are dehumanized in many cities in the U.S.

Segregated

The homeless become homeless because they are separated from their family and friends, not allowed space in their social network to live. For some, this is because they are doing or have done things that were unacceptable for their community, for others it is because they have received all the help their social community feel they deserve to have, while for others it is because they have no social network at all. Whatever the case, the homeless person begins their time on the street alone, separated from the people they are familiar with.

The Criminalization of Homelessness in U.S. Cities PDF Print E-mail

Homeless and no where to goCriminalization of the Homeless is becoming a rabid problem inside the political arena of US cities, to the point where politicians and officials are willingly breakiing the laws of the Constitution and Federal Government. Even when these politians are flatly told by Superior, District and Supream Court desicions that their actions are illegal, they continue to move forward with actions and policies which criminalize a segment of our population who by nature and historically have no means of fighting back.

The following is a list of cities who have reached the point of News-worthy, as well as aquiring what we would call Most Wanted, if they were run by criminials instead of politicians.

The civil rights of homeless people PDF Print E-mail
  • The civil rights of homeless people : law, social policy, and social work practice

The-Civil-Rights-of-Homeless-PeopleA disturbing backlash against homeless people has emerged in cities across the United States in the past two years. Cities that have a record of providing generous services and supports to homeless people are becoming increasingly hostile to them. Pressured by small groups of anti-homeless business people and residents, even many liberal people who formerly expressed sympathy for the plight of the homeless are now proclaiming their "compassion fatigue." They feel justified that their former compassion has given way to impatiences, frustrations, and even anger toward homeless people.
